Question

We need to apply more force to turn the door when we apply the force close to the hinges. Give reason?

Solution

  1. As the torque is the product of force and perpendicular distance from the pivot.
  2. So we need a maximum torque for easy opening or shutting a door by applying minimum force.
  3. But the force is maximum and torque is minimum near the hinge.
  4. Because the shorter the perpendicular distance, the greater force is needed to turn the door.
