Solution

Alcohols are the organic compounds with the general formula R-OH, where R is an alkyl group. They are the hydroxyl derivative of hydrocarbons where one or more H-atoms are replaced by -OH group. They are classified on the basis of number of -OH group present. For example - C2H5OH(ethanol/monohydric alcohol), HOCH2-CH2OH (Ethylene glycol/dihydric alcohol) and HOCH2-CH(OH)-CH2OH (Glycerol/trihydric).

Alcohols are obtained by synthesis. Following are the sources from which they can be obtained

  1. Destructive distillation of wood
  2. Fermentation of Sugar

C12H22O11(s)Sugar+H2O(l)WaterInvertase2C6H12O6(s)Glucose2C6H12O6(s)GlucoseZymase2C2H5OH(l)Ethanol+CO2(g)Carbondioxide

3. Hydrolysis of alkyl halides

CH3BrBromomethane+KOH(aq)PotassiumhydroxideCH3OH(l)Methanol+KBrPotassiumbromide
