When one or more H-atoms of aliphatic hydrocarbons are replaced by halogen atoms, the resulting compounds so obtained are called halogen derivatives of alkane or alkyl halide. The general formulae of alkyl halide is CnH2n+1−X, where X=Cl,Br,I.
Example: CH3−Cl(Methyl Chloride), CH3−Br(Methyl bromide), C2H5Br(Ethyl Bromide), C3H7−Br(Propyl bromide) etc.
The reaction of propylene with hydrogen bromide in presence of peroxide or oxygen or light forms n-propyl bromide as a major product.
CH3CH=CH2Propylene+HBRHydrogenBromidePeroxide⟶CH3CH2CH2Brn−propylbromide(majorproduct).
