The main type of cells in the islet of Langerhans in a pancreas are alpha and beta cells. The beta cells secrete insulin which is a peptide hormone, which plays a major role in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Insulin acts mainly o adipocytes and hepatocytes and enhances cellular uptake and utilization of glucose. Which results in rapid movement of glucose from the blood to hepatocytes and adipocytes resulting in decreased blood glucose level(Hypoglycaemia). Insulin also stimulates the formation of glycogen(glycogenesis) from glucose in the target cell.
