Solution

Coordination isomers

  • Coordination isomers are two or more coordination compounds in which the composition within the coordination sphere.
  • The interchange of ligands between anionic and cationic entities of different metal ions present in complex causes this type of isomerism.

Example of Coordination isomers

  • An example of this type of isomer is [Co(NH3)6][Cr(CN)6].
  • In the above coordination compound, cyanide CN ligands is attached to Cr3+, and ammonia NH3 ligands are attached to Co3+.
  • In its coordination isomer [Co(CN)6][Cr(NH3)6], the NH3 ligands are bound to Cr3+ and the cyanide CN ligands to Co3+.
