The Dagh and Chehra system was introduced by Alauddin Khilji (1296–1316) and consisted of two practices:

  • Ala-ud-din introduced a system of chehra, an identity card system for every soldier,
  • Dagh to brand horses to be used specifically for wars.
  • Dagh and chehra were the 2 reforms in the army.

Alauddin Khilji

Alauddin Khilji had been the Khilji dynasty’s most powerful ruler. He was the first Delhi sultan to conquer Southern India. Malik Kafur was Alauddin Khilji’s Commander who attacked South India.

  • In A.D.1296 Ala-ud – din Khilji succeeded Firoz Khilji in Jalal-ud-din and occupied the throne.
  • The generals of Ala-ud-din Khiliji, namely Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan captured Gujarat. Ranthambore was captured, and its ruler killed Hamir Deva.
  • He grabbed Malwa, Chittor, Dhar, Mandu, Ujjain, Marwar, Chanderi, Jalor and others.
  • He was the first Sultan to conquer South India.
  • He has sent his confidante and general Malik Kafur against the southern rulers.
