Dear Student,
The following are the most commonly used methods for purifying organic compounds with definition & usage.
1. Filtration: The method where liquids are separated from solids by filtering.
2. Evaporation: The process of separating volatile liquids from non-volatile solutes. Used where filtration can't be done due to small particle size.
3. Crystallisation: The process of solidifying a substance from the mother liquor by slow evaporation and/or diffusion. Pure solids are obtained.
4. Distillation: Used for large scale separation of petroleum products.
5. Column chromatography: The process is used for separation high degree of purity by extracting the components with different solvent mixtures.
