Two or more continents are held by sold rocky plates known as tectonic plates. These plates collide with each other releasing large amount of energy that causes tremors on surface of earth. The fault line where the energy is released is epicentre. Mostly, earthquake occurs at edges of tectonic plates. or at the intersection of two tectonic plates. The energy released travels in a wave form. it can be visualised as ripples created in a pond.
In some cases, where there is a major change in positions of plates. The plates reposition or adjust to their new position causing after shocks.
The motions between two tectonic plates can happen sideways or up and down.
Do's and Don'ts' during earthquake.
One must not panic and make decisions in haste. This is fundamental for survival in any situations , which includes earthquakes also.
If you are outside, it is necessary to move away from big buildings, lamp posts, bridges etc and head to an open area.
Do not take the elevator and use only the stairs. Care must be exercised to avoid broken electric wires. Do not use telephones unless there is a medical emergency that needs attention. Do keep in mind to move only when the shaking stops.
