An expressed sequence tag (EST) is a short sub-sequence and unique stretch of DNA within a coding region of a gene that is useful for identifying full-length genes. An expressed sequence of DNA which codes for a protein. It consists of three-nucleotide sequence on messenger RNA that codes for a single amino acid. It helps in the decoding of a mRNA message into a polypeptide chain.
