Question

What are fertilizers? How do they help the soil?

Open in App
Solution

Fertilizers are nutrient-rich chemical substances that are added to the soil to increase fertility the soil. These are used by the farmers daily to increase the crop yield. The fertilizers contain the essential nutrients required by the plants, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. They enhance the water retention capacity of the soil and also increase its fertility.

Fertilizers replace the nutrients that crops used from the soil. Crop yields and agricultural productivity would be significantly reduced when no fertilizer is added to the soil. That's why mineral fertilizers are used to supplement the soil's nutrient stocks with minerals that can be quickly absorbed and used by crops.
