  1. Basidiomycetes are distinguished by the production of sexual spores, known as basidiospores (usually four), on the outside of a specialized, microscopic spore-producing structure known as the basidium.
  2. Basidiospores are haploid, but when they mature, they can be uninucleate or multinucleate.
  3. Five types of basidiomycetes are:
    1. Mushrooms
    2. Puffballs
    3. Rusts
    4. Smuts
    5. Jelly fungi.
