Open in App
Solution

Grignard reagents

  • An important class of organometallic compounds discovered by Victor Grignard in 1900 is alkyl magnesium halide, RMgX, referred as Grignard Reagents.
  • Here, R is an organic group, normally an aryl or alkyl, and X is a halogen.

Preparation of Grignard reagents

  • These reagents are obtained by the reaction of haloalkanes with magnesium metal in dry ether.
  • The reaction for the preparation of the Grignard reagent is as follows:-

CH3CH2-Br+Mg→dryetherCH3CH2MgBr
