  • A periodic table contains 18 vertical columns which are known as groups arranged from left to right.
  • The periodic table has six horizontal columns which are known as periods and are arranged according to their atomic number.
  • Based on their valence shell they are divided into s,p,d, and f elements.
  • Group VI are categorized as d elements.
  • They have six elements which are OxygenO, SulfurS, SeleniumSe, TelluriumTe, PoloniumPo, and LivermoriumLv.
  • These elements are known as Chalcogens and are also known as the Oxygen family.
  • Chalcogen is derived from the Greek word Chalco, which means"ore" and gen means “formation”.

Characteristics of Group VI elements:

  • They have six valence electrons and have common oxidation states as-6,-2.+2and+4.
  • They are less toxic in nature.
  • They have high electronegativity.
