Question

Explain Group VIII Elements.

Open in App
Solution

Group VIII:

  • These elements are known as noble gases.
  • The valence electrons of the group VIII are filled with filled eight electrons which makes these electrons non-reactive.
  • They are stable and elements have a low energy state.
  • They have elements HeliumHe, NeonNe, ArgonAr, KryptonKr, XenonXe, and RadonRn.
  • They are non-reactive so it acts as a shield from reaction with air.
  • They do not form chemical bonds so it does not lose or gain electrons.

Characteristics of Group VIII elements:

  • These elements have low melting and boiling point.
  • They are used as cryogenic refrigerants.
  • They are used in medicine and Helium is used as an anaesthetic.
  • Argon is used as an incandescent lamp that prevents tungsten from oxidizing.
  • Helium is used as breathing gas by deep divers.
