Interferons are the proteins secreted by the virus-infected cells.

Role :

$\bullet$ Interferons produced by the viral infected cells bind to the receptors on the neighbouring cells.

$\bullet$ Nearby cells are signalled to produce antiviral proteins and are protected from the virus.

$\bullet$ The interferons also block viral replication by inducing the expression of several genes with antiviral functions.
