Question

What are interferons? How do interferons check infection of new cells?

Open in App
Solution

Definition:

Interferons are the proteins secreted by the virus-infected cells.

Role :

Interferons produced by the viral infected cells bind to the receptors on the neighbouring cells.

Nearby cells are signalled to produce antiviral proteins and are protected from the virus.

The interferons also block viral replication by inducing the expression of several genes with antiviral functions.
