Question

Define pure orbitals.

Open in App
Solution

Orbitals:

  • It is used to describe the properties of more than two electrons located in the atomic nucleus.
  • The orbitals 1s,2p,3dand4f give specific properties of electrons.
  • The s,p,d, and f tell about the shape of orbitals.
  • The s orbital has a spherical shape, p-orbital has a dumbell shape.

Pure orbitals:

  • Pure orbitals cannot undergo hybridization that has electrons, they have atomic orbitals.NumberofPureorbitals=NumberofHydrogenatoms+2×Numberofπorbitals.
  • For example benzene number of pure orbitals=6+2×3=12.
  • There are 12 pure orbitals in benzene.
