Sclereids are irregular or short types of sclerenchyma cells.
These are cells that have died.
Their lumen is very tiny and their walls are uneven and thick.
They don't have any metabolic functions.
They have lignin depositions of various sorts as well as pits.
Sclereids can be found in hard portions like seed coatings and the endocarp of coconuts.
Stone cells are another name for them.
