Solution

Solution- When a solute is dissolved completely into a solvent to form a homogeneous mixture is called a solution.

Example - The solution of sugar in water.

Solvent - The liquid in which another substance (solute) is dissolved.

Solute - The substance that is dissolved in a solvent.

Solutions play a very important role in the survival of organisms due to the following reason –

  • The minerals present in the atmosphere and soil cannot be absorbed as such so they are converted into ionic form and absorbed in form of solutions only.
  • The metabolic reaction taking place in the body of an organism needs a medium to happen, so the majority of reactions take place in the solutions present in the cell.
  • Solutions like a dilute solution of glucose and common salt is used to treat the patients with cholera and diarrhoea by providing the solution orally or by injecting directly into veins.
  • Transportation of nutrients in the body is possible only because the food is broken down into simpler compounds that form a solution in water that is absorbed and transported in the blood.
