What are the 2 types of nucleic acids?

Open in App
Solution

Nucleic acids:

  1. Nucleic acids are said to be long-chain polymeric molecules.
  2. The monomer (i.e. the repeating unit) is referred to as the nucleotides and hence sometimes nucleic acids are referred to as polynucleotides.

Types of nucleic acids:

  1. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA):
    1. It consists of biological instructions, which make each and every species unique from the other.
    2. It is made up of two linked strands.
    3. Each strand has a backbone made of phosphate and alternating sugar.
  2. Ribonucleic acid (RNA):
    1. It is present in all living cells. Its structures are similar to DNA, but most often it is single-stranded.
    2. The strand has a backbone made of sugar ribose and alternating groups of phosphate.
