Haemoglobin:

  1. Haemoglobin is a pigment molecule which is present in the RBCs and it is responsible for carrying oxygen.
  2. Due to some mutations the structure of the haemoglobin can get altered and these haemoglobins are present in the population.
  3. The different types of haemoglobins found are as follows:
  • Haemoglobin A (α2β2): It is the most abundant haemoglobin and it is mainly found in adults.
  • Haemoglobin F (α2γ2): It is called as the fetal haemoglobin and it is present in babies till they are six months of age.
  • Haemoglobin A22δ2): This is another type of haemoglobin which is also found in adults.
