Question

What are the 4 methods of ingestion in Amoeba?

Open in App
Solution

Amoeba:

It is a protozoan.

Ingestion:

  1. It is the process by which an organism takes in a particle.
  2. In simple terms eats it.

Methods of ingestion:

  • Import: If any food material comes into contact with its body, Amoeba remains stationary and without expanding any pseudopodia. The inert dietary ingredient is then absorbed into the body.
  • Invagination: When an amoeba's body comes into contact with a food particle, it secretes a sticky material that adheres to the body's surface.
  1. Besides the body of the amoeba secretes a toxin that destroys the living food material.
  2. In the form of a tube, the ectoplasm, along with the food, enters the endoplasm.
  3. The plasma membrane then vanishes, leaving a food vacuole behind.
  4. No pseudopodia is necessary for this technique
  • Circumfluence: Amoeba consumes immobile food items in this method.
  1. It produces a "food cup" as soon as it comes into touch with the food material, expanding the pseudopodia to bring the encapsulated food into direct contact with the body and absorb it.
  • Circumvallation: It surrounds the food item which is mobile, with the help of pseudopodia.
  1. The margins of the pseudopodia join together without touching the food material, forming the food vacuole.
  2. The pseudopodia form a cup when they encircle the food item known as a "food cup".
