Dear student,
The advantages of vegetative propagation are as follows:
- This is a very quick method so by this method the flowers and fruits can be prepared early.
- The plants produced by this method are similar to their parent type, so we can obtain the best variety of fruits and vegetables without loss of their quality.
- This is more certain method of producing plants than the seed reproduction, as it is easier, economical and a rapid method.
The disadvantages of vegetative propagation are as follows:
- There may be degeneration of species due to lack of sexual stimulus
- Due to lack of genetic variability there may not be evolution of new species.
- The plants produced by this method are short lived as compared to seed propagated plants.
- More susceptible to diseases because whole plant may get affected as there is no genetic variations.
- Due to overcrowding of large number of plants near the parent plant, there is a severe competition between the same species so many plants become weak.
