Question

What are the basic things which decides the rate of reaction. I know about ionization energy, metal activity series, electronic configuration, and electro negativity.

Solution

Dear Student,

The basic factors which affect the rate of reactions are:
i) concentration of reactants: rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of reactants present.
ii) temperature: as we increase the temperature of the reaction, there are more effective collisions between the reactant molecules and thus more product is formed.
iii) catalyst: the presence of catalyst in the reaction also fastens the reaction. The catalyst decreases the activation energy required for the reaction to happen and thus reaction accelerates.
iv) other factors like solvent also affects the rate of reaction.
