Parenchyma:

Parenchyma is a simple permanent tissue. The word parenchyma is derived from the Greek word ‘para’ means ‘side’ and ‘enchyma’ means ‘in-filling’.

Characteristics of Parenchyma are:

  1. Parenchyma is the precursor of all the other tissues.
  2. The tissue is a living cell consisting of unspecialized cells with thin cell walls.
  3. Their cells are made up of cellulose.
  4. They are loosely packed with intercellular spaces between them.
  5. Parenchyma cells are isodiametric i.e.‚ more or less equally expanded on all sides.
  6. They could be oval‚ spherical or polygonal in shape.
  7. They contain dense cytoplasm with a distinct nucleus and a large central vacuole.
