Question

What are the consequences if raisins are left for some time in pure water and then shifted to sugar solution?

Solution

Swelling and shrinking of raisins:

  1. Raisins are dry grapes with very low water content.
  2. When raisins are placed in pure water that acts as a hypotonic solution with more water molecules and less solute, then water moves into the raisins due to endosmosis.
  3. As a result, raisins swell up and then these raisins are transferred into a sugar solution.
  4. The sugar solution act as a hypertonic solution with more solute and fewer water molecules, which results in exosmosis, and raisins lose water.
  5. This leads to the shrinking of raisins.
