Question

What are the different methods of artificial vegetative propagation?

Open in App
Solution

Vegetative Propagation:

  1. Vegetative propagation is an asexual method of plant reproduction that takes place through leaves, roots, and stems.
  2. This can happen through fragmentation and regeneration of certain vegetative parts of plants.

Artificial method of vegetative propagation:

The artificial method of vegetative propagation is done by people in the fields and in the labs. Artificially occurring forms of vegetative reproduction include:

  1. Cutting: It involves cutting a part of a plant and planting it in the ground, usually a stem or leaf. These cuttings are sometimes treated with hormones to induce root growth. The new plant arises from the adventitious roots that grow when cut.
  2. Grafting: The cuttings of another plant are added to the plant stalk embedded in the earth. The graft tissues become incorporated with the rooted plant tissues and grow as a single plant over time.
  3. Layering: The stalk of the plant is bent to the ground and covered with soil. Adventitious roots emerge from the soil-covered parts of the plant. This attached stem with developing roots is called a layer.
  4. Tissue culture: In order to breed a new plant, the plant cells from different parts of the plant are cultivated in a laboratory. This technique is useful for increasing the number of rare and endangered species of plants that cannot grow under natural conditions
