Solution

The different methods used to separate a solid-solid mixture are : Handpicking, sieving, winnowing, magnetic separation and sublimation.

  1. Sublimation : It is the process of conversion of a solid directly into vapours without going through the liquid state. For example - a mixture of salt and ammonium chloride can be separated as ammonium chloride sublimes and separates when the mixture is subjectd to heat.
  2. Handpicking : In this method, the small soild unwanted substances are removed from the mixture by picking with hand. For example - the small stones and pebbles are handpicked from rice and pulses using this method.
