Question

What are the different types of moments of inertia?

Open in App
Solution

Moment of inertia: The body's resistance to having its rotation speed about such an axis changed by the administration of something like a turning force is known as a moment of inertia.

There are three types of moment of inertia, such as:

Mass moment of inertia:

  1. A quantity used to calculate a body's resistance toward a modification in rotation direction or angular momentum is called the mass moment of inertia.
  2. It essentially describes the acceleration experienced by a solid whenever torque is applied.

Area moment of inertia:

  1. A two-dimensional (2D) planar shape attribute displays how its points are distributed along an arbitrary axis throughout the cross-sectional planes.
  2. This attribute describes the deflection of the planar form underneath a load.

Polar moment of inertia:

  1. The polar moment of inertia is simply the proportion of resistance to bending forces in circular beams for a particular torque.
  2. It's also used to figure out how much torque a circular body has.
