Question

What are the disadvantages of anaerobic respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Anaerobic respiration:

  1. Anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and releases less energy than aerobic respiration but more rapidly.
  2. Anaerobic respiration in microorganisms is mainly called fermentation.

The disadvantages of anaerobic respiration are as follows:

  1. When compared to aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration produces only two ATPs as well as lactic acid.
  2. Lactic acid produced during anaerobic respiration, causes pain and cramps when working more on the muscles.
  3. Anaerobic yeast does not contain citric acid cycles or excess ATP produced by the electron transport chain.
  4. Thus, the ability to survive in the absence of oxygen comes at a cost.
  5. Anaerobic yeast produces 18 times less ATP per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration.
