What are the effects of acid rain?

Open in App
Solution

Acid rain: Some gases like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide released from the vehicles, and factories mix with the air. In the air, these gases react with oxygen and water vapour to form some acids like sulphuric acid and nitric acid. These acids get mixed with rain and result in precipitation that is highly acidic. This rain is called acid rain.

Harmful effects of acid rain are:

  • Acid rains can destroy standing crops and forests.
  • Due to acid rain, excess nitrogen inputs from the atmosphere in the seas promotes increased growth of marine plants and phytoplankton which may result in the formation of algal blooms.
  • Due to acid rain the Tajmahal's marble turned yellow colour. The Tajmahal is made from limestone, due to acid rain this limestone get dissolves in an acidic solution or low pH.
  • Acid rain has an adverse effect on aquatic creatures like fishes, insects etc.
