What are the functions of stomata in the leaf?

Open in App
Solution

Stomata:

  1. The epidermis of leaves has features called stomata.
  2. Each stoma is made up of two guard cells that surround the stomatal pore.
  3. The inside walls of guard cells are thicker, while the exterior walls are thin.
  4. Guard cells have chloroplasts and regulate the opening and shutting of stomata.
  5. A few epidermal cells surrounding the guard cells occasionally become specialized in shape and size and are termed subsidiary cells.
  6. Stomatal apparatus refers to the stomatal opening, guard cells, and surrounding subsidiary cells.

Functions of stomata in the leaf:

  1. Stomatal opening and closure help with the gaseous exchange between the plant and the environment.
  2. The stomata govern the transpiration process.
  3. During photosynthesis, stomata help the plant absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
  4. Water does not escape through the pores while the stomata are closed at night, limiting water loss.
