The UN Security Council (SC) is the most powerful organ that comprises 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members. The main aim of this council is to maintain international peace and security by dealing with various security matters. Its functions are as follows:
a. To maintain international peace and security in accordance with the objectives of the UN
b. To investigate and make recommendations for peaceful resolution of conflicts among the nation states
c. To design plans and proposals in order to encourage disarmament
d. To recommend military action against any state and impose sanctions or initiate any other measure against the aggressor
e. To recommend admission of new states in the UN
f. To make recommendations to the UN General Assembly for the appointment of the Secretary-General and other appointments
g. The SC is best known for its peace keeping missions- The Security Council brings into notice any event that is likely to threaten world peace; thereby, recommending ceasefire.
