The presence of a large amount of organic and inorganic materials such as fertilizers in water causes excessive growth of planktonic (free-floating) algae, which is called algal bloom. It imparts a distinct colour to the water bodies. Following are the ill effects of algal bloom:
It causes deterioration of the water quality and fish mortality.
Some bloom-forming algae (e.g., Microcystis) are extremely toxic to human beings and animals.
Algal blooms deplete the oxygen content. This turns the water toxic and increases its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
