Question

What are the ill effects of algal blooms?

Open in App
Solution

The presence of a large amount of organic and inorganic materials such as fertilizers in water causes excessive growth of planktonic (free-floating) algae, which is called algal bloom. It imparts a distinct colour to the water bodies. Following are the ill effects of algal bloom:
  1. It causes deterioration of the water quality and fish mortality.
  2. Some bloom-forming algae (e.g., Microcystis) are extremely toxic to human beings and animals.
  3. Algal blooms deplete the oxygen content. This turns the water toxic and increases its biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
