Question

What are the limitations of the Newlands law of octaves?

Open in App
Solution

Limitations of Newlands' law of octaves

  • Several elements were grouped together in Newland's periodic classification. Nickel and Cobalt were inserted together in the same slot.
  • Distinctive element qualities were categorized. Halogens, for example, were used to classify metals such as Cobalt, Nickel, and Platinum. Newland's octave law was only valid up to Calcium.
  • The atomic masses of elements with higher atomic masses were too huge to fit within octaves. Later discovered components could not fit within the octave layout. As a result, this classification approach made it impossible to detect new components.
