Stolons, sometimes also called runners, are slender, elongate horizontal stems that grow above ground. Stolons are classified as either procumbent or repent. Repent stolons grow roots at nodes on the stem that are in contact with soil, while procumbent stolons do not. Plantlets develop at rooted nodes along the stolon and are severed from the parent plant as a means of propagation. Rhizomes are similar to stolons but grow horizontally at or below the soil surface and can be fleshy and thicker than stolons, as they serve as storage organs for the plant.
