Question

What are the phases of clathrin-mediated endocytosis?

Open in App
Solution

Clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME):

  1. The principal method for concentrative uptake of surface receptors (i.e., cargo) and their associated ligands, including nutritional, adhesion, and signalling receptors, is clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME).
  2. It also controls the number of transmembrane transporters on the surface, and thus their activity.
  3. Cell–cell and cell–substrate interactions, intercellular communication, and cellular homeostasis are all controlled by CME.
  4. CME is by far the most well-studied and understood endocytic mechanism.
  5. CME is divided into four stages:
    1. Initiation
    2. Stabilization
    3. Maturation
    4. Membrane fission
