Question

What are the possible combinations for the gametes that can be obtained if two hybrid plants are crossed?

Open in App
Solution

Combination of gametes depend on if the cross is monohybrid or dihybrid.
In case of monohybrid cross, 2 types of gametes are possible. For example monohybrid cross for height involves two types of gametes i.e. one with allele 'T' and another with 't' allele. Here 'T' and 't' represents dominant tall and recessive dwarf allele respectively. If cross is taking place between two hybrid plants, each one of them will produce 2 types of gametes.
In case of crossing between two dihybrid cross, total 4 types of gametes are possible.
Considering that cross is taking place for two characters, hybrid plant can be represented by AaBb. Each hybrid plant will produce gametes in the combination AB, Ab, aB and ab.
