  1. It is a hyper-condensed form of DNA that contains the genetic material to be passed on from the parents to the offspring.
  2. It is present in the nucleolus of the nucleus.
  3. There are 23 pairs of chromosomes comprising 22 autosomal chromosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes.

Chromosomal Abnormality:

  1. Chromosomal abnormalities refer to dysfunction or deformations in the arrangement of chromosomes, their segments, or simply a section of the chromatids.
  2. They are caused due to errors in crossing-over, duplication, or segregation after linkage and recombination have occurred.
  3. Various mutagens result in mutations causing chromosomal abnormalities.
  4. Chromosomal abnormalities could result in duplication, insertion, inversion, or translocation of chromosomal segments.

Signs and symptoms of chromosomal abnormalities:

  1. Physical deformations
  2. Mental retardation
  3. Cognitive and learning disability
  4. Metabolic dysfunction
