The three major components of food are: Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats.
Final products of digestion of various food components

  • Starch becomes Maltose by the action of salivary amylase.
  • Proteins, proteases and peptones (partially hydrolysed proteins) in the chyme reaching the intestine are acted upon by the proteolytic enzymes of pancreatic juice and becomes dipeptides.
  • Carbohydrates are digested and converted into monosaccharides like glucose.
  • Proteins broken down to aminoacids
  • Fats are broken down to fatty acids and glycerol
  • Nucleases in the pancreatic juice acts on nucleic acids to form nucleotides and nucleosides.
