What are valence electrons? Give example.

Open in App
Solution

Valence electrons:

The electrons present in the outermost shell i.e. valence shell of an atom are known as valence electrons.

Example:

  1. Consider Sulphur (S) having atomic number 16. Thus, the number of electrons in Sulphur are 16.
  2. The electronic configuration of Sulphur is (2,8,6).
  3. The outermost shell has 6 electrons. Hence, the valence electrons present in Sulphur atom are 6.
