The electrons present in the outermost shell i.e. valence shell of an atom are known as valence electrons.

Example:

2. The electronic configuration of Sulphur is $(2,8,6)$.
3. The outermost shell has $6$ electrons. Hence, the valence electrons present in Sulphur atom are $6$.
