Question

What are vestigial organs? Explain with a few examples.

Open in App
Solution

Vestigial organs are those organs that have ceased to be of any use to the organism but still persist generation after generation in their reduced form. Infact, these organs or parts are believed to have served important functions in the ancestors of the organism.
For example: Muscles of ear pinna which are useless to humans are useful in monkeys (lower primates) for movement of ear pinna. This shows monkeys and humans share common ancestors.
