Change in the DNA sequence of an organism is called a mutation.

Deletion Mutation:

  1. Deletion is a type of point mutation.
  2. The mutation which occurs in a DNA sequence where a single base pair is added, deleted, or changed is called a point mutation.
  3. In deletion, a base pair is deleted from the DNA sequence.
  4. Cystic fibrosis and cat cry syndrome are genetic diseases due to deletion mutation.

Causes of mutation:

  1. Errors in DNA replication during cell division, exposure to mutagens(UV radiations), or a viral infection.
  2. The deletion may be due to a chromosomal crossover error during meiosis, which causes a number of serious genetic diseases.
