Question

What causes eutrophication?

Open in App
Solution

Farmers use an excess of fertilizers to increase crop productivity. When rainwater washes off the topsoil, the excess fertilizers are carried to the water bodies. This results in the overgrowth of algae and other water plants like water hyacinth. This is called eutrophication.

As a result, aquatic animals do not get enough oxygen to breathe and, eventually, they die.
