Question

what causes the protein to loose its radioactivity in hershey and chase experiment

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Protein in bacteriophage was labelled with S35 while DNA was labelled with P32. While infecting bacteria in hershey and chase experiment DNA entered the bacterial cell therefore radioactive labelled DNA was recovered but since protein did not enter bacterial cell therefore radioactivity in protein was lost. Actually radioactivity in protein was recovered in supernatant. Therefore radioactivity in bacterial cell was recovered due to DNA labelled with P32.
