What changes in the colour of iron nails and copper sulphate solution do you observe after keeping the iron nails dipped in copper sulphate solution for about 30 minutes?

Solution

When a grey colour iron nail is dipped in blue colour sulphate solution, a brown coating of copper is formed on the surface of iron, and the colour of the copper sulphate solution changes from blue to pale green. This reaction shows that iron is more reactive than copper because it displaces copper from the copper sulphate solution.

CuSO4 (aq) + Fe (s) → FeSO4 (aq) + Cu (s)

Copper sulphate Iron Iron Sulphate Copper

(Blue) (Grey) (Green) (Brown)
