The following conditions of the Balkan area led to world war 1:
a. The diverse Slavic nationalities struggled to express their identity and independence. Hence, the Balkan area became an area of intense conflict.
b. The Balkan states were envious of each other and each wanted to gain more territory at the expense of the other.
c. During this period, the European powers were also engaged in competition with each other over the issues of trade and colonies as well as army and naval power.
d. Each power-Russia, Germany, England, Austria-Hungry was very keen on putting barriers over other powers in occupying Balkan region and wanted to extend its control over the area. This gave rise to a series of war in the region finally leading to the First World War.
