Many ruling families protected themselves by creating rules and norms in the society that favoured them. They sough their birth privileges, status, money, religion etc to ascertain power and authority.

Eg: British tough they were the superior race and hence conquered many countries
eg: Aryans created the caste system where Brahmins suppressed other castes.
