Detritus feeders, also known as detritivores, consume dead and decaying plant and animal components, as well as their excreta.
Detritus feeders are heterotrophs, i.e. they depend on other organisms for their food.
Detritus feeders play a role in the carbon cycle by recycling the carbon atoms from the atmosphere to organisms on earth, then back to the atmosphere many times.
Examples: Millipedes, dung flies, slugs, sea cucumbers, fiddler crabs, etc.
