When we say we understand mechanics we mean that we can show that any mechanical observation can be explained on the basis of the assumptions of the model of mechanics (like the Newton’s laws of motion) Knowing how to draw a free body diagram is just one of the methods to bring it down to assumptions of mechanics. We assume these assumptions based on observations and set them as our basic axioms because we find all further observations can be explained using these. This is inductive reasoning. Though the axioms could be questioned yet we don’t do that while working under the framework of the model unless we find observations that go against these axioms.
